Depression and Mood Disorders
Depression and mood disorders are mental health conditions that affect a person’s mood, feelings, and behavior.
Depression is a mood disorder characterized by feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest in activities that were previously enjoyed. People with depression may also experience other symptoms, such as changes in appetite and sleep patterns, low energy, difficulty concentrating, and thoughts of self-harm or suicide. Depression can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, life events, and imbalances in brain chemicals.
Mood disorders refer to a group of mental health conditions that affect a person’s mood and emotions. Mood disorders include major depressive disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and Cyclothymic Disorder.
In Bipolar Disorder, people experience periods of intense highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression).
Cyclothymic Disorder is a milder form of bipolar disorder, in which people experience repeated periods of low-grade depression and hypomania.
Treatment for depression and mood disorders often involves a combination of medication and psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or interpersonal therapy. Lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise, a healthy diet, and stress management techniques, can also be helpful in managing symptoms.
